At the core of the project will be three towns that would each install a community owned and operated renewable energy (RE) generator. Those three settlements (Talgarth, Rhayader and Llanidloes) have been identified and all three are currently planning hydro-power schemes.
The core RE installation will provide a focus for initial activity and for the engagement of the whole community. It will create a sense of pride and a catalyst for further action to reduce carbon emissions, reduce fuel poverty and cut business over-heads, whether that be via energy efficiency measures or further renewable energy installations. Income from the initial RE installation would be recycled into this activity much as has been achieved at Talybont-on-Usk.
That part of the project that will be funded through this programme will culminate with a conference that will be open to all, but aimed primarily on Powys communities. The conference will provide a platform for the dissemination of experience, knowledge and passion arising out of this project as well as fore-runners in this area, Ecodyfi and Talybont Energy.
